    The impact of organic livestock standards on animal welfare – a questionnaire survey of advisors, inspectors and veterinarians

    This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. A questionnaire survey of organic sector body inspectors, organic advisors and farm animal veterinarians was conducted to examine the respondents’ perceptions of the ability of the organic standards to deliver positive impacts on welfare of organic livestock. A total of 44 separate standards concerning livestock production were extracted from the United Kingdom Register of Organic Food Production livestock production standards. The respondents were asked to consider the potential impact of each standard on animal welfare in comparison to the routine practices used on conventional farms, using a five-point scale (improve significantly, improve slightly, no impact, deteriorate slightly and deteriorate significantly). A simple scoring system was used to rank the different standards in terms of their perceived positive impact on animal welfare. The significance of differences between respondent groups and livestock species were examined. Preliminary findings of the survey are summarised and the usefulness of the approach to evaluate livestock production standards is discussed

    The phenotype of circulating follicular-helper T cells in patients with rheumatoid arthritis defines CD200 as a potential therapeutic target

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease primarily affecting synovial joints in which the development of autoantibodies represents a failure of normal tolerance mechanisms, suggesting a role for follicular helper T cells (TFH) in the genesis of autoimmunity. To determine whether quantitative or qualitative abnormalities in the circulating TFH cell population exist, we analysed by flow cytometry the number and profile of these cells in 35 patients with RA and 15 matched controls. Results were correlated with patient characteristics, including the presence of autoantibodies, disease activity, and treatment with biologic agents. Circulating TFH cells from patients with RA show significantly increased expression of the immunoglobulin superfamily receptor CD200, with highest levels seen in seropositive patients (P=0.0045) and patients treated with anti-TNFα agents (P=0.0008). This occurs in the absence of any change in TFH numbers or overt bias towards Th1, Th2, or Th17 phenotypes. CD200 levels did not correlate with DAS28 scores (P=0.887). Although the number of circulating TFH cells is not altered in the blood of patients with RA, the TFH cells have a distinct phenotype. These differences associate TFH cells with the pathogenesis of RA and support the relevance of the CD200/CD200R signalling pathway as a potential therapeutic target

    Quantum privacy amplification and the security of quantum cryptography over noisy channels

    Existing quantum cryptographic schemes are not, as they stand, operable in the presence of noise on the quantum communication channel. Although they become operable if they are supplemented by classical privacy-amplification techniques, the resulting schemes are difficult to analyse and have not been proved secure. We introduce the concept of quantum privacy amplification and a cryptographic scheme incorporating it which is provably secure over a noisy channel. The scheme uses an `entanglement purification' procedure which, because it requires only a few quantum Controlled-Not and single-qubit operations, could be implemented using technology that is currently being developed. The scheme allows an arbitrarily small bound to be placed on the information that any eavesdropper may extract from the encrypted message.Comment: 13 pages, Latex including 2 postcript files included using psfig macro

    X-ray Crystallographic Characterization of the Co(II)-substituted Tris-bound Form of the Aminopeptidase from \u3cem\u3eAeromonas proteolytica\u3c/em\u3e

    The X-ray crystal structure of the Co(II)-loaded form of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica ([CoCo(AAP)]) was solved to 2.2 Å resolution. [CoCo(AAP)] folds into an α/β globular domain with a twisted β-sheet hydrophobic core sandwiched between α-helices, identical to [ZnZn(AAP)]. Co(II) binding to AAP does not introduce any major conformational changes to the overall protein structure and the amino acid residues ligated to the dicobalt(II) cluster in [CoCo(AAP)] are the same as those in the native Zn(II)-loaded structure with only minor perturbations in bond lengths. The Co(II)–Co(II) distance is 3.3 Å. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (Tris) coordinates to the dinuclear Co(II) active site of AAP with one of the Tris hydroxyl oxygen atoms (O4) forming a single oxygen atom bridge between the two Co(II) ions. This is the only Tris atom coordinated to the metals with Co1–O and Co2–O bonds distances of 2.2 and 1.9 Å, respectively. Each of the Co(II) ions resides in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. This important structure bridges the gap between previous structural and spectroscopic studies performed on AAP and is discussed in this context

    Talking about Forests: an Example of Sharing Information Expressed with Vague Terms

    Most natural language terms do not have precise universally agreed definitions that fix their meanings. Even when conversation participants share the same vocabulary and agree on taxonomic relationships (such as subsumption and mutual exclusivity, which might be encoded in an ontology), they may differ greatly in the specific semantics they give to the terms. We illustrate this with the example of `forest', for which the problematic arising of the assignation of different meanings is repeatedly reported in the literature. This is especially the case in the context of an unprecedented scale of publicly available geographic data, where information and databases, even when tagged to ontologies, may present a substantial semantic variation, which challenges interoperability and knowledge exchange. Our research addresses the issue of conceptual vagueness in ontology by providing a framework based on supervaluation semantics that explicitly represents the semantic variability of a concept as a set of admissible precise interpretations. Moreover, we describe the tools that support the conceptual negotiation between an agent and the system, and the specification and reasoning within standpoints

    Are We Seeing Magnetic Axis Reorientation in the Crab and Vela Pulsars?

    Variation in the angle α\alpha between a pulsar's rotational and magnetic axes would change the torque and spin-down rate. We show that sudden increases in α\alpha, coincident with glitches, could be responsible for the persistent increases in spin-down rate that follow glitches in the Crab pulsar. Moreover, changes in α\alpha at a rate similar to that inferred for the Crab pulsar account naturally for the very low braking index of the Vela pulsar. If α\alpha increases with time, all pulsar ages obtained from the conventional braking model are underestimates. Decoupling of the neutron star liquid interior from the external torque cannot account for Vela's low braking index.     Schumacher's quantum data compression as a quantum computation

    An explicit algorithm for performing Schumacher's noiseless compression of quantum bits is given. This algorithm is based on a combinatorial expression for a particular bijection among binary strings. The algorithm, which adheres to the rules of reversible programming, is expressed in a high-level pseudocode language. It is implemented using O(n3)O(n^3) two- and three-bit primitive reversible operations, where nn is the length of the qubit strings to be compressed. Also, the algorithm makes use of O(n)O(n) auxiliary qubits; however, space-saving techniques based on those proposed by Bennett are developed which reduce this workspace to O(n)O(\sqrt{n}) while increasing the running time by less than a factor of two.Comment: 37 pages, no figure
