Transatlantic Issues: Report from Scotland
Several bioethical topics received a great deal of news coverage here in Scotland in 2009. Three important issues with transatlantic connections are the swine flu outbreak, which was handled very differently in Scotland, England, and America; the U.S. debate over healthcare reform, which drew the British National Health Service (NHS) into the controversy; and the release to Libya of the Lockerbie bomber, which at first glance might not seem particularly bioethical, but which actually hinged on the very public discussion of the prisoner’s medical records. On a national level, there have been attempts in both Scotland and England to change the law on assisted suicide, where success looks more likely than ever. This paper discusses each of these issues and hopefully will raise awareness of how these issues were dealt with in the United Kingdom and its component countries
The Role of Trust in Neighborhood Recovery: Examinations from New Orleans’ Recovery from Hurricane Katrina
This dissertation describes and helps delineate the circumstances under which different kinds of trust influenced neighborhood recovery in the Greater New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina. These analyses provide insights into the effects of neighborhood levels of social capital, organizational capacity, particularized racial trust and generalized trust on the mean level of household recovery in Orleans and St. Bernard Parish neighborhoods. Results suggest that neighborhood organizational capacity and several measures of neighborhood social capital had direct and positive effects on neighborhood recovery and that the effects of generalized trust on neighborhood recovery are not fixed and that neighborhood organizational capacity moderates the extent to which generalized trust influences neighborhood recovery. The interactional effects of organizational capacity and generalized trust reflect the compensatory nature of social resources. The interaction reveals that neighborhood organizational capacity matters less among neighborhoods with high generalized trust and matters more among neighborhoods with low generalized trust. In this way, high organizational capacity can compensate for low generalized trust in the process of neighborhood recovery. These findings suggest how cooperative relations and other potentially beneficial structures of social relations can be supported either through organizational capacity or through trust. Moreover, these findings suggest that of the two methods for achieving effective cooperation, organizational capacity may be relatively more advantageous than interpersonal trust for hurricane recovery outcomes
Modeling Amyloid Beta Peptide Insertion into Lipid Bilayers
Inspired by recent suggestions that the Alzheimer's amyloid beta peptide (A
beta) can insert into cell membranes and form harmful ion channels, we model
insertion of the 40 and 42 residue forms of the peptide into cell membranes
using a Monte Carlo code which is specific at the amino acid level. We examine
insertion of the regular A-beta peptide as well as mutants causing familial
Alzheimer's disease, and find that all but one of the mutants change the
insertion behavior by causing the peptide to spend more simulation steps in
only one leaflet of the bilayer. We also find that A-beta 42, because of the
extra hydrophobic residues relative to A-beta 40, is more likely to adopt this
conformation than A-beta 40 in both wild-type and mutant forms. We argue
qualitatively why these effects happen. Here, we present our results and
develop the hypothesis that this partial insertion increases the probability of
harmful channel formation. This hypothesis can partly explain why these
mutations are neurotoxic simply due to peptide insertion behavior. We further
apply this model to various artificial A-beta mutants which have been examined
experimentally, and offer testable experimental predictions contrasting the
roles of aggregation and insertion with regard to toxicity of A-beta mutants.

What country, university or research institute, performed the best on COVID-19? Bibliometric analysis of scientific literature
In this article, we conduct data mining to discover the countries,
universities and companies, produced or collaborated the most research on
Covid-19 since the pandemic started. We present some interesting findings, but
despite analysing all available records on COVID-19 from the Web of Science
Core Collection, we failed to reach any significant conclusions on how the
world responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, we increased our analysis
to include all available data records on pandemics and epidemics from 1900 to
2020. We discover some interesting results on countries, universities and
companies, that produced collaborated most the most in research on pandemic and
epidemics. Then we compared the results with the analysing on COVID-19 data
records. This has created some interesting findings that are explained and
graphically visualised in the article
Criterial Noise Effects on Rule-Based Category Learning: The Impact of Delayed Feedback
Variability in the representation of the decision criterion is assumed in many category learning models yet few studies have directly examined its impact. On each trial, criterial noise should result in drift in the criterion and will negatively impact categorization accuracy, particularly in rule-based categorization tasks where learning depends upon the maintenance and manipulation of decision criteria. The results of three experiments test this hypothesis and examine the impact of working memory on slowing the drift rate. Experiment 1 examined the effect of drift by inserting a 5 s delay between the categorization response and the delivery of corrective feedback, and working memory demand was manipulated by varying the number of decision criteria to be learned. Delayed feedback adversely affected performance, but only when working memory demand was high. Experiment 2 built upon a classic finding in the absolute identification literature and demonstrated that distributing the criteria across multiple dimensions decreases the impact of drift during the delay. Experiment 3 confirmed that the effect of drift during the delay is moderated by working memory. These results provide important insights into the interplay between criterial noise and working memory as well as providing important constraints for models of rule-based category learning
Oral diabetes medication monotherapy and short-term mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease
Objective To determine whether sulfonylurea use, compared with non-sulfonylurea oral diabetes medication use, was associated with 2-year mortality in individuals with well-controlled diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD). Research design and methods We studied 5352 US veterans with type 2 diabetes, obstructive CAD on coronary angiography, hemoglobin A1c ≤7.5% at the time of catheterization, and taking zero or one oral diabetes medication (categorized as no medications, non-sulfonylurea medication, or sulfonylurea). We estimated the association between medication category and 2-year mortality using inverse probability of treatment-weighted (IPW) standardized mortality differences and IPW multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression. Results 49%, 35%, and 16% of the participants were on no diabetes medications, non-sulfonylurea medications, and sulfonylureas, respectively. In individuals on no medications, non-sulfonylurea medications, and sulfonylureas, the unadjusted mortality rates were 6.6%, 5.2%, and 11.9%, respectively, and the IPW-standardized mortality rates were 5.9%, 6.5%, and 9.7%, respectively. The standardized absolute 2-year mortality difference between non-sulfonylurea and sulfonylurea groups was 3.2% (95% CI 0.7 to 5.7) (p=0.01). In Cox proportional hazards models, the point estimate suggested that sulfonylurea use might be associated with greater hazard of mortality than non-sulfonylurea medication use, but this finding was not statistically significant (HR 1.38 (95% CI 1.00 to 1.93), p=0.05). We did not observe significant mortality differences between individuals on no diabetes medications and non-sulfonylurea users. Conclusions Sulfonylurea use was common (nearly one-third of those taking medications) and was associated with increased 2-year mortality in individuals with obstructive CAD. The significance of the association between sulfonylurea use and mortality was attenuated in fully adjusted survival models. Caution with sulfonylurea use may be warranted for patients with well-controlled diabetes and CAD, and metformin or newer diabetes medications with cardiovascular safety data could be considered as alternatives when individualizing therapy
